159.    Alfred Leete (1882-1931) "Your Country Needs You", original News-stand poster printed for London Opinion by the Victoria Printing Co Ltd. Sept 5 1914 - 76 x 51 cm

This is the very rare poster that spawned what was to become the one of the World's most recognised and much plagiarized icons, the Britons Lord Kitchener "Wants You" recruiting poster of September 1914. The subject poster was published to advertise the 5 September 1914 issue of the popular illustrated magazine "London Opinion", Alfred Leete's design was so striking when it appeared on the news stands it was commandeered by the Government's Parliamentary Recruiting Committee and permission was sought to use it as a Recruiting poster. The published recruiting poster was also printed by the Victoria Printing Company leading to the likely conclusion that the magazine owner gave consent for its reproduction making it a condition that the printing contract went to the magazine's own printers. The subtle difference between the two posters is the change from "Your Country Needs You" to "Wants You". Since 2014 when Onslow's sold a copy of the war poster for a staggering £22,000, two further copies of the poster have been sold by Onslow's since for five figure sums. The subject poster in the auction could be said to be even rarer than its successor, as to our knowledge this is the first time a copy has appeared for sale by auction.
